How to prevent your computer from getting infected with virus? Through the years of working with computers, I've notice that the way to prevent your computer form getting infected with virus is to follow some basic steps, listed below:
Use a good antivirus software like Bitdefender, kaspersky, AVG or Avast. Try to avoid the ones that your internet provider or bank offers you, they tend not to do good job. I personally suggest getting Internet Security software from one the vendors listed above. However if intend to save some money, there are some free solutions out there like, the Microsoft Security Essentials, ClamAV or AVG-Free. Unlike the Microsoft Security Essentials they do not protect you against spyware, adware or rootkits, however, they will at least get you protected against virus's. Don't forget to update your antivirus software on a daily basis as new virus's are created daily. Many antivirus programs can be set to update automatically, however, I recommend you do a manual update ounce a week to make sure you get all updates available. Keep your computer up to date. Set you Windows update to automatic, and perform a custom windows update form time to time. Do not open emails from strangers, especially if they have attachments Try to avoid clicking on links, pictures and advertisements in social networking websites, you may unknowingly install malicious software on your computer. Hyde your email address in the profile, let just your frinds see it. Avoid free software unless they are open source or they come from a well know name like Microsoft or Sun Micro Systems. So much of the "free" Software or Games on the Internet are usually Trojan Horses for other malicious software or virus's. When in doubt just Google the software and read the results carefully before install it. Files sharing, yes, for those who want to save some money downloading music through limewire or frost wire or any other files sharing software, there is a price too. You will have to have your computer cleaned of virus's and malware from time to time because your are connecting to an unprotected peer to peer network. If you are downloading files from someone else's computer that is infected with viruses you will most likely get infected too. One last thing, adult websites, be very careful with these. They make money from the pop ups and malware and virus's they will put on your pc. Never allow them to get a hold of your email no matter how tempting the offer may be, you may regret the amount of spam you receive and the additional malicious software that will be delivered via email.
